In the City of Boston when a person picks up the phone to call for help the fire department will always show up to help; as firefighters we feel like we can always do what it takes to make a bad situation better for the person in need. Unfortunately when it’s one of us that needs help after a cancer diagnosis the firefighter’s friends and family feel helpless. I was in this situation in 2020 when my younger brother Dan was diagnosed with occupational cancer. Many of us felt like there was nothing we could do. After a tremendous amount of work by Dan Ranahan and others The Boston Local 718 Firefighter & Family Cancer Foundation was founded in 2021 aiming to provide funding to support firefighters and their families impacted by a cancer diagnosis. I was honored to be selected to participate in the 127th running of the Boston Marathon representing such a remarkable organization.
